Celebration

Celebration is here! Celebration is a major dance-and-culture festival that happens every two years. It was first held in 1982, and since then it's become the largest cultural event in the state. Thousands of people from all over Southeast Alaska come here for the festival. There are dance performances,  art shows, workshops, lectures and a huge parade through downtown Juneau.

Yesterday, the major streets downtown were closed off so that the dancers could parade through the town. Because of this, Jonny and I parked the car and walked through town to get to work; we both had tours to do. I snapped a couple of shots of the dancers as we passed by. You'll notice that they're wearing their native regalia- they craft beautiful clothing depicting their heritage. I wish I could have stayed and watched for a bit longer!

The rest of the downtown area seemed kind of empty. Here are some pictures on South Franklin St., the path I drive through every day to get to work.

Here's a common sight: a cruise ship in port! Isn't it big?

Later in the day, I took a group of 30 people out hiking in our largest bus. We split the group up between three guides and had a great time out on the trail. Here's a picture of me driving the bus.

How'd you like a ride in this baby?

Stay tuned for more adventures!!
