A Drive Out the Road

 Hi everybody! Audrey here!

The sun came out a little bit yesterday, so I decided to take a drive "out the road" while Jonny was at work. Out the road means when you drive down the main road past the valley. 

My first stop was the Shrine of St. Therese.

The trail continues out to an island.

There's a little chapel located on the island.

A large cross overlooks the cliffside by the ocean.

Here's the inside of the chapel.

The cloud patterns over the water were spectacular.

Snow covered the rocks all the way up to the intertidal zone.

You can see the snow-capped Chilkats on the horizon.

Such beautiful mountains!

Further down the road, you can see small tree-covered islands off the coast.

On the side of the road, the snow was piled up so high that I couldn't walk up to the trees without sinking several feet into it.

Winter is slowly turning into spring! I can't wait to see the moss and flowers again!

Phone Pics

Hi everybody! Audrey here. Thought I'd upload some phone photos I've been taking since we arrived here in Juneau.

Here are some of my car icicles. The snow builds up on the top of my car, and then melts when I drive. The water drips down off the bumper and then freezes again.

I scrape off my car pretty well before I drive. I arrived at work and parked my car outside without any snow left on it. This is how it looked when I came back to it 9 hours later.

How would you like to do carts out in this weather?

This is the view from my desk window at work. I certainly can't complain!

And here's where I work! It was originally designed as a penthouse above the local grocery store downtown. Now there's a laboratory facility inside it.

I just love looking out the windows from out here.

I snapped a picture in the Costco parking lot of the wall of snow left after plowing it.

These are the beautiful mountains that surround Juneau.

You don't often get to see a portion of sky free from clouds... but when you do, it's spectacular!

It's supposed to be getting warmer (into the high 30's), so our cars shouldn't be getting thick layers of ice on them like they were when we first arrived.

And that's all for now! It's back to work in the morning for another full week of water testing. But I'll make sure to keep my eye out for more picture opportunities, so keep checking back for more!

Our New Home

Hi there!  It's Jonny with my first update ever.

We finally got our own place in Juneau!  It's a nice condo in between downtown and the valley. Let me show you where that is.

Here is where Juneau is located in the state of Alaska.

And here is where our new condo is located in relation to downtown Juneau (where Audrey works.) I work in the valley, which is in the opposite direction. We are the black star on the map. Auke Bay, to the northwest of our condo, is where the ferry dropped us off when we arrived.  For scale, we are about 5 miles from downtown Juneau.

Oh yes... how nice it is to have a washer and dryer.

I get a lot of people asking me what the weather is like.  I think a video of the view from our living room windows will give you a good idea.

It's Still Snowing!

It sure has been snowing a lot lately! But this IS Alaska, after all. Rather than trying to fight it, Jonny and I decided to have a little fun today and build a snowman! Check out the snowfall.
